Dear Festividder 2024
Sep. 29th, 2024 06:20 pmHello! I am so excited that you are going to be making me a gift or a treat for festivids! I so look forward to whatever wonderful vid I receive from you :)
Before I get into some specific fandom stuff, here's some general info about my preferences. Music-wise, I'm a big fan of thoughtful lyrical matches with the visual source, and I'm open to pretty much any genre. Even if it isn't something I'd listen too much myself, if a song is a good match for a source that's the most important thing. I would say there isn't anything content-wise in any of the sources I've requested that need to be avoided, and I don't have any visual triggers to avoid. My one big dislike that's worth mentioning is diegetic sound, but if it's done well I am definitely convincible. My main thing is I really prefer not to have dialogue overlapping with lyrics, but some well-deployed dialogue during instrumental moments or a sound here and there isn't an issue. Anyway, on to my fandom requests!
Adaptations of The Body Snatchers, by Jack Finney
There's something so interesting to me about stories that get adapted over and over. I love seeing different takes on a story, how the telling of it differs based on the artistic vision of the creators, the interpretation of the original text, and, as is especially apparent with this story, the historical context of the different versions. The story of The Body Snatchers (a book I have not actually read, but really ought to given my love of these movies) is one of paranoia that you cannot trust even those closest to you, and of fearing that you too may loose your identity and autonomy to an invisible force outside your control. While these elements of the story stay consistent throughout its adaptations, how these fears resonate and what they allude to culturally differs tremendously between the 50s, 70s, 90s, and 00s. There are 5 adaptations total (if you count the terrible looking mockbuster Invasion of the Pod People, which came out the same year as The Invasion), and I've seen the first three (the 90s one is actually pretty good!), and do plan to watch The Invasion at some point, even if it looks boring as hell. I'd be really pumped to get a vid that includes at least the first two versions, though honestly including all of them (or at least the four that are, like... legitimate movies. Truly no pressure to include the Pod People one) would be very very cool! I'd be interested in a vid that contrasts the adaptations, or one that focuses on the common themes, or really whatever you want to do with these sources, I just think they're neat! Also, though I'm primarily interested in direct adaptations, I could definitely be open to broadening the scope to include other pieces of media that are clearly heavily inspired by, or are paying homage to this story (such as The Faculty) if that is a part of your vision.
Beverly Hills Cop
Beverly Hills Cop is just such an all time comfort movie for me, and I love Axel Foley. I think he is a delight. I adore his Bugs-Bunny-ass tendency to improv his way out of sticky situations. Cards on the table, I've only seen the first movie and don't feel terribly compelled to watch the rest, so I'm mostly just invested in getting a vid focusing on the original movie. That said, if you really want to include stuff from the others, be my guest, I'd just prefer if the enjoyment of the vid didn't hinge too much on knowing the stories of the other movies. Mostly I'm here for a character vid about Axel, so if including antics from the other movies will make that happen, go for it!
Crashing
SAM. AND. FRED. God these two and their stupid fucked up dynamic is like crack to me. Sam is such an unwell man, he is a problem, and I love him and want to study him under a microscope. I don't think I've ever blorbo'd this hard over such a piece of human trash. He is perfect to me. He is a mess. Make me a vid about him/them. PLEASE.
Filmed stagings of Stephen Sondheim shows
We are so lucky to live in a world where so many of Stephen Sondheim's works have been professionally filmed for us to enjoy forever. To the best of my knowledge, these include (with the ones I've seen bolded):
- Company (2006)
- Company (2011)
- Follies (1985)
- Follies (2017)
- Gypsy (2015)
- Into the Woods (1991)
- A Little Night Music (1990)
- Merrily We Roll Along (2013)
- Merrily We Roll Along (2023 - not out yet, but maaaaybe it will be in time for festivids?)
- Pacific Overtures (1976)
- Putting it Together (1999)
- Sunday in the Park with George (1986)
- Sweeney Todd (1986)
- Sweeney Todd (2001)
- Sweeney Todd (2021)
First Cow
This is just a wonderful period piece about two guys stealing a cow's milk to make pastries to sell right back to that cow's owner, and I think it's great. If you haven't seen it, go watch it. In fact, I should go rewatch it, I've only seen it once. But yeah, this movie is lovely and someone should make me a vid about it, please and thank you.
Holiday
This film is one of my all-time favorite romances, and, along with When Harry Met Sally (another perfect romance), is a MUST watch at New Years for me and my family. The characters in it really make such an impression. I adore Johnny. I adore Linda. I adooore Ned. I would welcome a vid about Johnny and Linda's romance, or a character study about Linda or, if you're feeling ambitious, Ned.
Marmalade
Watched this movie on an airplane cause I could not possibly resist a heist movie staring Joe Keery (Steve Harrington, my beloved) and Aldis Hodge (Alec Hardison, my beloooved!!!). It was so much fun, has a delightful twist, and is generally a movie I think would make a super fun vid.
M*A*S*H
I love everyone in this mobile army surgical hospital. Except Frank. But everyone else? Unspeakably dear to me, and I would accept vids about any of them. I would absolutely love a Hawkeye character study or a BJ/Hawkeye vid, though I have seen vids about them before, so if you were feeling adventurous and like you wanted to spread the vidding love a bit, I'd also be so very pumped to get a character study of a side character like Radar or Margaret..... or Father Mulcahey.... or Colonel Potter......... or Charles... or Sidney.... OH NO I was only gonna list Radar and Margaret but then I remembered, and I cannot emphasize this enough, I love everyone in this mobile army surgical hospital except Frank!!!!!
Now and Then
Truly there are NOT enough movies of this genre (ragtag group of tween best friends going on adventures, usually during the Summer, usually on bikes) about girls! Now and Then is a comfort movie I've seen countless times and it just makes me happy. It makes me happy, it makes me emotional, it makes me sing along loudly to every song on its perfect soundtrack! This is just a wonderful movie about friendship and I'd love a vid about the whole group or any individual character or pair within the group.
The Road to El Dorado
This movie is gay and poly as hell and I think it deserves more gay and/or poly as hell vids. I'm here for Miguel/Tulio or Miguel/Tulio/Chel. Other than that? Just make it gay and fun!
